READY READING Lessons: Part 1.2

What materials do we need to start?

It’s actually EASY to get started teaching reading to nonreaders!  With a copy of the Ready Reading Teacher’s Manual in hand, there are  just a few basic things required–and those can be found in almost every home and classroom.  The two main things necessary for most lessons are to get something with which to write and something on which to write.

If you’re a teacher who has always used chalkboards or whiteboards, then use them.  If you prefer to write on chart paper, then put it where the students can see what you’re writing.  If you like to use a tablet or computer with a projector, that works.  Even if you’re in a remote area with no modern equipment, you might have a bed of sand or smooth area of dirt where you can write with a stick.  Students enjoy using a variety of materials for writing and these can be changed from lesson to lesson. Although the supplementary materials for Ready Reading are available in print form, each student does not need a copy of the page since he or she can do the writing and drawing on lined or plain paper. More examples of materials will come later.

No equipment, no excuses–where there’s a will, there’s a way!  I expect that many of you have used some creative, nontraditional, ways of writing, and we’d love some Blog feedback that would help enliven lessons for our readers.
